Polython Ad Hoc Lab aims to share knowledge of Python programming language through student-led learning sessions and small scale projects that address questions related to the field of political science.

Political science, and social science in general, need to extend its perspective of data beyond theoretical and observational analyses to address the rapid transformation of data in the current era. Political scientists are now interested in not only national but also individual-level analysis and seek to create data on their own based on their interests instead of downloading established datasets.

Python is widely used as a helpful tool for handling large datasets, especially in API usage, web scraping, text analysis, machine learning, and geospatial analysis. However, in spite of its versatility, Python is still not as commonly used among graduate students majoring in political science due to its high barriers of entry. In this ad-hoc lab, we wish to overcome such barriers. Throughout the lab, members will share their understanding of Python and distribute their study notes to all interested researchers. They will also be encouraged to apply Python’s packages in their own research.

We are open to all students and researchers interested in cultivating Python programming skills who are looking to apply such skills in addressing their political science research puzzles. This lab welcomes individuals of all levels of familiarity with programming.

Polython Ad Hoc Lab은 정치학도들의 파이썬 언어 입문을 돕는 가이드북을 노션 페이지로 작성하여 공유하는 것을 목적으로 합니다.

오늘날의 정치학은 제도적, 이론적 분석을 넘어서 급변하는 4차 산업혁명 시대에 마주하여 데이터에 대한 새로운 시각을 요구하고 있습니다. 정치학의 분석 대상은 국가 차원에서 개인 차원으로 확대되었고, 연구자들은 주어진 데이터를 수동적으로 사용하는 것이 아니라 적극적으로 수집하고 스스로 가공해내는 자세가 필요합니다.

파이썬은 API 활용, 웹 스크래핑, 텍스트 분석, 머신러닝, 지리공간 분석 등에 있어 널리 사용되는 Stata나 R 프로그램보다 빅데이터 데이터 활용에 장점을 보입니다. 그러나 파이썬의 범용성에도 불구하고 높은 진입장벽으로 정치학 대학원생 사이에서 이는 제한적으로만 사용되고 있습니다. 이에 랩원들은 직접 파이썬을 배워나가며 초심자의 눈높이에서 이해한 파이썬의 기초와 정치학의 렌즈를 통해 적용한 예시들을 공유하여 다른 정치학도들의 입문을 독려하고 관련 연구를 촉구하고자 합니다.

파이썬이나 프로그래밍 언어에 대한 기초 지식이 없는 분들도 저희 애드혹 랩에 참여하실 수 있습니다. 파이썬 언어 활용에 관심이 있으신 모든 분과의 협업을 환영합니다!
