We take a multifaceted approach to studying states’ use of economic foreign policy tools to achieve political objectives

Economic Statecraft Lab은 정치적 목적을 달성하고자 경제적 수단을 동원하는 국가의 대외 전략에 대해 연구합니다. 경제적 수단이란 전쟁과 같은 물리적인 타격 없이 이와 비슷한 효과를 낼 수 있는 강압적 외교 정책인 경제 제재, 제재와는 반대로 처벌보다는 원조, 무역 계약 및 투자를 제공하는 보상적 유인책을 뜻합니다.

이를 위해 ESL은 회귀 분석, Automated Text Analysis, 네트워크 분석 등을 포함하는 양적 방법 뿐만 아니라 사례 분석, Process-tracing을 포함하는 질적 방법을 활용하여 다양한 연구 주제에 접근합니다. 우리 ESL 구성원들은 연구원들 간 주기적인 토론과 협업을 통해서 유의미한 연구 성과를 산출하고 있습니다.

ESL은 다양한 방법론을 바탕으로 경제적 수단을 동원한 국가의 외교 정책 수립 배경, 동기, 각 정책의 효과 등을 분석합니다. 또한, 단순히 국가 수준의 분석 뿐만 아니라 국내 정치와 국제 정치를 연계한 연구를 통해서 보다 정교한 분석과 포괄적인 이론을 확립하는 것을 목적으로 합니다.

Economic statecraft denotes states’ use of economic instruments to achieve certain political objectives. These instruments, used in place of other more costly alternatives such as war, involve offering (e.g., trade contracts, foreign aid, investment) or withholding economic advantages (e.g. economic sanctions) as a means to attain desired objectives vis-à-vis other actors in the international system.

Our goal, through collaborative research, is to build theories that explain the domestic and international processes that affect the objective, outcomes and causal mechanisms of these economic tools of foreign policy. And to produce both theoretically and methodologically sound research, we subject our theories to rigorous analysis using a wide range of methods including regression analysis, automated text analysis, network analysis and process-tracing.
