Christianity and Politics Ad-hoc Lab

Religion has not remained confined to the realm of the soul; statecraft and the course of history have long borne its imprint.

Religion has not remained confined to the realm of the soul; statecraft and the course of history have long borne its imprint. Christianity, in particular, has long helped shape political thought and public life, not only through the leadership of figures such as Abraham Kuyper and Martin Luther King Jr., but also through institutions such as sanctuary and principles such as the common good. Its influence can be traced in the formation of American national identity and Nordic nation-states, and beyond national borders in the postwar human rights order, international norms, and modern humanitarianism. The separation of church and state has drawn an institutional distinction between religion and politics, yet questions about their boundaries and interactions persist in contexts ranging from terrorism and counterterrorism, which have reshaped the security paradigm, to the theological turn in contemporary political thought.

This lab takes Christianity, the world's most widely followed religion, as its point of departure. A common Judeo-Christian heritage has not, however, yielded a single Christian politics. Rather than confining the diverse political interpretations and practices within Christianity to the opposing poles of the Christian Left and the Christian Right, the lab seeks to understand them across a wider spectrum of political positions. Yet Christianity is not merely the subject of this inquiry. It also offers an analytical lens through which contemporary political phenomena may be reconsidered, bringing overlooked questions into view and opening possibilities of explanation that have yet to be explored. The emphasis, therefore, lies less in explaining Christianity itself than in revisiting political questions through concepts developed within the Christian tradition. Through sanctuary, the lab examines state sovereignty and citizenship; through subsidiarity, the distribution of authority between the state and intermediate communities; and through human dignity, questions of judgment and responsibility in AI and biopolitics.

The lab examines how Christian political positions and their underlying reasoning vary across countries and issues, drawing on its members’ linguistic expertise to analyse primary sources in their original languages. Alongside this comparative inquiry, it considers the normative standards and implications that Christian values and concepts may offer to contemporary politics, particularly as advances in science and biotechnology and debates in political thought in the wake of postmodernism renew questions about what human beings and societies ought to pursue.
